    Frequently Asked Questions

    General

    What is online backup?

Online backup is an automated service that allows computers to securely backup data to and recover from remote server.

    How does online backup work?

The backup set picks up all files that are new or have been updated since the last backup. Each of these files is then zipped, encrypted and securely backed up to our server in a secure location.

What sort of files should I back up?

Files you consider holding critical information should be backed up such as text documents, emails or spreadsheets but not the software or applications themselves.

Can same files be backed up at different intervals?

Yes, in the Manage Routine page you can use the form to define your preferences of how you want different system routine jobs to run. Just set up an identical file sets but set it to run at a different time.

Can I backup files from any drive?

Any file on a fixed, networked or temporary drive can be backed up. Please see how to backup network files in the question "How do I backup network-shared directories?"

How long will it take to backup my files?

Backup time depends on your connection type, the speed of the modem, internet traffic and the amount of data selected. The good rule of thumb is that under optimum conditions, 1Gb of data will be transferred to the server. So the first backup might be good to schedule to start over night or a weekend depends on amount to be done.

How do I know that my data has been backed up?

An email report will automatically be generated to confirm that the backup was successful. This report contains a summary for the backup job that was run and a full listing of all files being backed up by the backup job. In addition to reviewing your backup activities from the email report, you can also review any of your backup jobs by using the [Report] panel available on the web interface. To review a backup job, just select the required backup job from the [Backup Set] and [Backup Job] drop down list.

    How often should I backup?

There is no definite answer to this but generally once a day is recommended, preferably at a time that you have completed your most critical work for the day.

Can I use my computer whilst backup is running?

Absolutely. It should not affect any work you wish to do at the same time.

What if I lose my password?

If you have forgotten your password, you can retrieve it by simply entering your login name or your registered email address on the [Password Request] form and press the [Request] button. Your password will be sent to your registered email address automatically.

Does the free 14 day trial offer the same as the service I would buy?

Yes it is exactly the same, but limited to 14 days so that you can try out the full functionality. If you decide you like the trial it’s easy to sign up for the on-going backup. Simply work out how much space you need and fill in the appropriate payment form. If you would like to talk to someone before you decide, give us a call on 0845 241 0502.

How do we backup 'Open Files'?

Files should never be backed up while they are open by an application. When an application is running, it stores its data both in system memory and in data files. Backup by copying the data files while an application is running would fail to capture the application data stored in system memory in the backup job. Not only is it backing up less data than what should be backed up, it can also lead to data inconsistency that can finally result in backup files being unusable by the application. The correct and the only right way to backup an application is to shutdown the application before running a backup job (unless hot backup is supported). When an application is shutdown, it frees its acquired system memory and flushes all application data from system memory to its data files. The data files now contain everything needed to start an application successfully. Backing up application data files when it is shutdown will guarantee data consistency and backup files usability.

Can I have another set of backup stored locally?

Yes, just choose local copy option on the backup set. We would recommend that that copy of data is being saved onto a removable media for offsite storage.

Aren't Tape Backups cheaper and easier to use?

Backing your precious data to tape leaves it vunerable to corruption and theft. Calculate the time it takes for your employees to backup to tape each day, the risk of human error and the gamble of getting your data 100%safely offsite. With JUSTbackupz, your are backed up securely and automatically daily. You can retrieve your data anytime of the day or night from anywhere with your laptop and internet connection.

Where is my data stored? Is it safe?

Your data is stored in a Nuclear Bunker. An impregnable fortress, sitting 30 metres below ground. It has concrete walls three metres thick, steel doors weighing over two tons that protect the servers and digital storage units within. Layered on top of this physical inaccessibility is a 24-hour watch with guard dogs, CCTV and a series of sophisticated access controls that offer the ultimate in protection from a myriad of attacks, including crackers, terrorist attack, electro-magnetic pulse, electronic eavesdropping, HERF weapons and solar flares.
